Assists with resources and aid to qualifying tribal members in financial distress to attain or retain basic living needs.  Funds are limited to families experiencing hardships.  The requestor must meet the criteria established by the program to ensure fairness and equity to be considered for assistance.  The Ho-Chunk Nation's Emergency Assistance Program is available to Ho-Chunk tribal members in all five areas.  Assistance is limited to critical illness, food assistance, energy assistance, temporary lodging for homeless/jobless situations and housing assistance.  All financial assistance is paid directly to vendor(s).  The Emergency Assistance Program is the payer of last resort.  As part of the application process, the applicant must exhaust all resources available to them before being considered for this program, such as federal, state and county programs and per cap loans.

This federally funded program provides commodity foods to low-income American Indian households residing in approved rural areas and is an alternative to the Food Share (Food Stamp) Program.  The program is especially designed to assist with nutritional needs on a monthly basis.

Tribal Aging Unit Sunshine Fund
The TAU Sunshine fund is limited to Ho-Chunk Nation Elders (60 yrs. or older) who are experiencing financial hardship.  In all but emergency medical situations, an application and supporting documentation must be submitted prior to receiving assistance.  Supporting documentation will be required for emergency medical situations after the fact and before further requests will be considered.  Contact your local TAU for more information.

The Ho-Chunk Nation’s Children and Family Services purpose is to protect children and families by implementing the requirements established in the Hocak Nation Children & Family Act and Ho-Chunk customs and tradition.  Children & Family Services also assist the County Child Protection Units in facilitating their responsibilities under the Indian Child Welfare Act.

An Intake Specialist receives referrals in regards to child protective issues; an ICW (Indian Child Welfare) worker provides assistance with intakes, home studies for placement homes and assists with ICW cases.  Social Workers/Case Managers investigate intakes; facilitate prevention services; provide protective services for children; facilitate services to counties and families for ICW case in the County court systems.

The Ho-Chunk Nation Head Start Program operates six centers::  The Centers are located in Wittenberg, Nekoosa, Tomah, Wisconsin Dells, and two in Black River Falls.  The program has the capacity to serve 120 children, and is required to serve children 3 to 5 years of age, and targets children from low income families, children with disabilities, and other at risk populations.

The mission of the Higher Education Division is to provide guidance and financial assistance to Ho-Chunk tribal members who intend to pursue a post-secondary education.  Scholarships are granted as a privilege with the intent that graduates will return to the Ho-Chunk Nation to use their knowledge and expertise to protect and strengthen the economic self-sufficiency and sovereignty of the Ho-Chunk Nation.

The Ho-Chunk Nation Education Department also includes Johnson O’Malley, Dr. Josephine P. White Eagle Scholar status, Pre-K-12 Grant Program, Nikuusra Community School and Community Education.
