The Bad River Tribe's Reservation, established by treaty in 1854, is located in northwestern Wisconsin, along the shores of Lake Superior. The Bad River Tribe is part of the Chippewa (Ojibwa) Nation which extended from the upper mid-west and Great Lakes regions of the United States north into central Canada.

The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe's Reservation is located in northeastern Wisconsin, southeast of the town of Eagle River. This tribe of Potawatomi are the descendants of tribal members who refused to move west of the Mississippi during the first half of the Nineteenth Century.

The Ho-Chunk Nation (formerly the Wisconsin Winnebago Tribe) does not have a defined reservation. The Nation's center of government is located in Jackson County, but tribal lands are located in the Wisconsin counties of Dane, Sauk, Monroe, La Crosse, Wood, Clark, Shawano, Columbia, Juneau, Vernon, Jackson, Eau Claire, and Marathon. In addition, tribal trust lands are located in Houston County, Minnesota.

The Lac Courte Oreilles' Reservation is located in western Wisconsin, approximately 90 miles south of Duluth, Minnesota. In addition to operating a resort on the Chippewa Flowage, the tribe also oeprates a grocery store, K-12 school, community college, gas station, cranberry marsh, elderly centers, and a radio station.

The Oneida Nation's Reservation is only five miles from Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Oneida Nation is part of the Iroquois Confederacy which was formed in the 1500s. The Cayuga, Mohawk, Seneca, and Onondaga tribes are also members of the Confederacy. The Wisconsin portion of the Oneida Nation moved from upstate New York to Wisconsin in the 1820s.

GLIFWC protects and enhances the treaty guaranteed rights of Chippewa Indians to hunt, fish, and gather in the lands ceded under the Chippewa treaties of 1836, 1837, 1842, and 1854. In addition, it protects and enhances the treaty guaranteed fishing rights on the Great Lakes. GLITC was originally formed in 1963 and is a consortium of federally recognized tribes in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. When GLITC began it was a vehicle for delivering services to reservations, but as tribal governments have grown and expanded, GLITC has taken on the role of assisting tribes in delivering services and in supplementing the services tribes provide to their communities.
