The client came into our office to thank the attorney for his hard work.”
“A Judicare Legal Aid attorney helped a client living in public housing who was facing eviction for rule violations stemming from her disability. “A staff attorney represented a Native American mother who had been denied Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) after her three kids’ schools closed in March 2020. In addition, she was being garnished for a defaulted student loan. The DWD denied her PUA claim for a year and through the advocacy of the attorney, she was finally able to obtain benefits. In August 2021 she went back to work at a big box store and contacted UW Eau Claire about finishing her degree. Due to the previously defaulted student loan, she was ineligible for financial assistance but was able to finance her tuition from the back payment of PUA. She followed the attorney’s advice and entered into a payment plan on her defaulted loan. The attorney also advised her to apply for an income-based repayment plan, which was granted. The client graduated in May 2022, with a Bachelor of Arts and recently began applying for new jobs. The client wrote to thank the attorney and to let us know that she was preparing for an interview with the State of Wisconsin. The client was extraordinarily grateful that all the attorney’s advice and assistance had led to a real future of improved health and well-being for her family and expressed that it had transformed their lives forever.”
“A Judicare Legal Aid attorney helped a survivor of domestic violence get the peace of mind of a four year domestic abuse restraining order against the abusive father of her young child. The abusive father had threatened to kill our client and kidnap their child, and had attempted to run our client and their child off the highway. Our client was very grateful to have a compassionate attorney standing up for her against the man who had abused her.”
“A Judicare Legal Aid attorney advocated on behalf of a client for over a year to ensure the client received the approximately $5,000 they were eligible for in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits. The client’s claim was twice denied because the agency and administrative law judge did not apply the proper legal standard. The Judicare attorney won in front of the Labor Industry and Review Commission, securing the client’s benefits just in time for the holidays.”
“A Judicare Victims’ Rights Project attorney represented a parent of a child murdered in a mass casualty incident that killed over 10 people. The defense filed a motion with the goal of prohibiting the victims’ families from being able to share victim impact statements. The Judicare attorney successfully argued for our client – the murdered child’s mother – to have the opportunity to provide a victim impact statement at sentencing, providing an opportunity for our client to be heard and seek closure after her child’s murder.”
“A Judicare Legal Aid attorney helped a client who was defrauded out of nearly $1,000. The client hired a company to fix the A/C in his home, but the company used a defective part and did not fix the A/C system, but still charged our client. The Judicare attorney assisted the client with a complaint to the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection resulting in a refund of the client’s money.”
“A Judicare Legal Aid attorney represented a victim in a 2018 battery case that was stalled out in the criminal court. Through the Judicare attorney’s involvement, the District Attorney’s office assigned a prosecutor to the case after years of delay. Within 7 months of the Judicare attorney becoming involved, the defendant was convicted at a jury trial. The client was relieved to finally have justice and closure so he could move on with his life.”
“A Judicare Legal Aid attorney assisted a client who left her job to care for her young grandchild after the child’s school closed during the pandemic. The client’s unemployment case was initially denied, but the Judicare attorney successfully appealed the case to ensure the client received the approximately $21,000 she was entitled to.”
